The "Digitrans eVAN" is a pioneering automated vehicle designed for real-world testing. Equipped with an electric drivetrain and state-of-the-art technology, this road-legal experimental vehicle offers numerous advantages and can be deployed across various applications in the field of automated driving. The Digitrans eVAN is available for rental by companies and research institutions for testing, demonstration purposes, as a measurement vehicle, or as a data collection platform. It accommodates up to six passengers but can also be utilised for cargo transportation. In Austria, the automated vehicle was deployed in 2024 as part of the RIAMO project in Linz-Pichling (more details on the RIAMO project and test operations in Linz-Pichling can be found in the next section).

In 2024, the vehicle underwent several technical upgrades, making it one of the most advanced automated test vehicles in Austria. Among the key enhancements was the integration of the SpaceX Starlink satellite modem, ensuring a stable internet connection even in remote areas. Additionally, a new GPS module was installed to expand the Operational Design Domain (ODD) and extend the Digitrans eVAN's deployment area.
During the summer, the approval process with TÜV Süd AG in Germany was successfully completed, granting the vehicle Level 2 approval for operation in Germany. A major milestone in 2024 was the execution of a use case in Spiegelau, Germany, where the shuttle was deployed on a demanding route. Challenges included partially unpaved roads, the absence of road markings, and dense tree coverage along and above the roadway. Localization via LiDAR was not feasible due to the lack of distinguishable landmarks, and the absence of a cellular network in the area prevented the reception of correction data for GPS-based localization. As a solution, a satellite modem was integrated, successfully compensating for these challenges and enabling reliable navigation.
Funded as part of the 18th Mobility of the Future programme of the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG), the automated test vehicle ‘Digitrans eVAN’ is the result of innovative research.
»The enhancements now enable the vehicle to establish an internet connection via satellites, which greatly improves its operational capability. GPS localisation offers numerous advantages for automated vehicles, improving both safety and efficiency.«
