Transnational, multimodal traveller information and journey planners for environmentally-friendly mobility in the Danube Region
Multimodal travel information services and route planners like AtoB Ljubljana in Slovenia, AnachB route planner in Austria, Utvonalterv in Hungary and many others inform travellers about the details of their trip as well as the most suitable means of transport. Most of these travel information systems have emerged in an urban or regional context and are therefore limited to local and regional modes of transport and contain few cross-border or demand-side information. The LinkingDanube project addresses this problem by linking the largely isolated systems across borders. LinkingDanube is funded by the INTERREG Danube Transnational Program of the EU.
LinkingDanube builds on the concept of "linking services" through a common, open application programming interface (OpenAPI). The OpenAPI enables services to communicate with each other and exchange routing results without integrating the data from the other systems. Therefore, "linking services" is a decentralized approach where the data are supplied and maintained in the local source systems. However, an integrator is needed that handles the requests and responses between the communicating systems and merges them into one final result for the traveller. Therefore, in LinkingDanube, a central node, the so-called "Danube Region Journey Planner" is developed which takes over the integrator role and demonstrates the technical feasibility of "linking services” in the project pilot.
The project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance II (IPA II) and European Neighbourhood Instrument (ENI).
