Establishment of efficient, automated and safe connected heavy-duty vehicles in real logistics operations
The EU-Project AWARD – All Weather Autonomous Real logistics operations and Demonstrations – focuses on automated freight vehicles in real logistics operations. With a budget of 26M+ euros, 29 partners from twelve countries, including eight Austrian partners, are testing such vehicles in realistic scenarios with the aim of demonstrating their practical usability and gaining important insights for real operation. The experience and knowledge gained is intended to pave the way for the introduction of driverless surface transport in order to overcome the problems of driver shortage and capacity utilization in all weather conditions.
In the various use cases, one or more automated vehicles are used. It is shown how automated mobility can be used concretely and which framework conditions still have to be created. The Austrian partners deal with a use case in Upper Austria, where the vehicle should also use public roads.
In addition to the technology of the vehicles and its components, the focus lies also on the required external conditions required to make the best possible use of the potential of automation. With the aim of developing recommendations regarding a framework for regulating and controlling the use of automated vehicles in logistics, external stakeholders will also be involved and consulted. These include road operators, suppliers and certification authorities. This involvement is intended to ensure that all interests are taken into account in the development process. Furthermore, road safety also plays a central role in the recommendations.
